Make the proper foundation for your greenhouse

Greenhouse foundations made of flagstones, cobblestones or wood

When you have decided to buy a greenhouse for the garden, you need to consider how to make a firm and stable foundation. That is, if you have chosen a greenhouse or orangery with a metal frame. If you prefer a light polytunnel greenhouse, you can more or less set it up anywhere as long as the ground is fairly even and stable. A greenhouse with a metal frame in aluminium or galvanized steel requires a little more. Do you place the greenhouse with a metal frame directly on the grass or soil? Then you must ensure the greenhouse is level. If not, you have to expect trouble with the door(s) and more not working properly after a while when the soil is sinking and setting. Take the time to make a proper foundation, and the greenhouse will stay in place for many years.

First, you need to find the right place for the greenhouse

Before starting a foundation, you must find the right garden spot. The best location is a combination of where you would like the greenhouse and the best position regarding the sun, large trees, buildings, access ways, and more. Also, consider how you are going to use the greenhouse. Is it solely for growing all sorts of plants during the summer? Or is it also an elegant garden gazebo where you can stay inside in all kinds of weather, enjoying the garden at a 360° angle? Maybe you want to place the greenhouse away from the house or right next to it. It is all up to you and the sun!

Now you can start making a foundation

There are many ways to make a strong and elegant foundation for your greenhouse. You can, e.g., cast a foundation in cement. Here you may consider how deep the foundation should be, as you can make a frost-free floor inside the greenhouse. It takes more work, but often it will be worth the effort as you can keep plants inside the greenhouse during the winter. In general, you need to dig down about 90 cm, but please check with a professional to make it right concerning the soil in your garden and more.

An elegant foundation in flagstones or wood

A foundation made of flagstones, cobblestones, or wood also takes some work but will be worth it. This way, you will have a nice floor inside the greenhouse, maybe in front or around the greenhouse. When using the greenhouse as a garden gazebo, you can place it on a wooden deck. However, if you plan to put large containers with soil for plants inside the greenhouse, be sure to make the wooden deck strong enough! With flagstones and/or cobblestones, the weight will be no problem. Furthermore, you can easily remove a small part of the floor if you want to plant directly in the soil underneath the greenhouse.
