Boat shelters: How to make your boat ready for winter storage

Boat shelters from Dancover

It is always a good idea to take care of your boat during summer and in the winter, too. Dancover has some high-quality boat shelters where you can store your boat during the winter and more when you need to have it inside a sturdy shelter for protection during the time when you do not use the vessel. As opposed to your car, which has been made for all year use, your boat has many more exposed parts that will corrode over time. If you do not cover and shelter your boat during winter, it may end up costing you a lot of money in repairs. Our boat shelters can protect your boat against the elements during winter but you have to make the boat ready for storage. We have gathered some advice about preparing a boat for winter storage. Follow the list so your boat will be well protected and ready for the new season next year. Most of the Dancover boat shelters are so big that you can do some preparing for winter inside the shelter.

Boat shelters for winter storage – checklist for preparing your boat for storage

First, take your boat out for the last run of the year and check if the engine is running smoothly. Look for any damage anywhere on the vessel. Then go back and drain your boat. Take it out of the water and drain the bilge, water tanks, head, pipes, and seacocks.  Add antifreeze into the bilge and water tanks to prevent freezing. Then you clean the boat thoroughly with soap and water both inside and outside. Remove any plant life and barnacles from the hull. When you have cleaned the boat, let everything dry completely. Depending on the type of boat, you have, apply a coat of wax onto the hull and polish evenly.

Winterize the engine and lubricate moving parts. Remove and charge the battery. Store the battery in a warm, dry place. Then remove everything that is not part of the boat like life jackets, fire extinguishers, and flares. If possible, remove organic materials such as fabric and leather to prevent mildew. Our boat shelters are large, waterproof, and sturdy but the temperature and level of humidity will follow the outside. Consider sealing exhaust ports with duct tape to prevent pests from entering.

Mount your boat on supports with the bow tilted slightly upwards to secure drainage. Do not keep your boat on a trailer during winter storage as the tires and bearings can wear down over time. Check the boat from time to time and make sure that the cover is taught so water cannot assemble on top of the boat shelter making the structure collapse in case of too much water. In case of heavy snow, make sure to remove the snow from the shelter.
